When an IELTS test-taker goes on the test centre, the test begins with writing module if a candidate takes paper-pen-delivered test. In case of computer-delivered test, the begins with listening module followed by reading and writing.
In writing module, the IELTS test-taker gets two tasks. Both tasks need to be written in 60 minutes. In academic module, the first task is report writing. A candidate has to write 150 words describing the task. The task 2 is essay writing. In this task, a test-taker writes an essay exceeding 250 words limit.
For an IELTS GT or IELTS UKVI test-taker, the task 1 is letter writing. A candidate is asked to write a letter (Formal, semi-formal or informal) in 150 words on a given situation. The task 2 is essay writing. In this task, a test-taker writes an essay exceeding 250 words limit.
The listening module remains the same for Ielts academic, Ielts gt and IELTS ukvi candidates. There are total 4 parts in the listening test. It means there will be four different conversations played during the test. Every part will have ten questions each. Hence, the entire question paper comprises 40 questions.
In this test, the test-taker is given headphones for listening to the audio. Based on the audio played on the headphones the test-taker is required to answer the questions. The listening doesn’t get repeated a second time. So, the test-taker has to be attentive while taking the test.
Once all 40 questions are answered, the test-taker is given ten extra minutes to transfer the answers to an answer sheet. The next module is reading.
The reading test consists of 40 questions for all the IELTS test-takers. In case of academic module, there are three passages given. However, the IELTS GT or IELTS ukvi reading test has four to five sections. The total time for the test is 60 minutes.
The speaking test is one-on-one test with an examiner. The entire test is conducted in three parts.
The part 1 is introduction. In this part an examiner asks general day-to-day life questions to the candidate on three topics. This part lasts for 4-5 minuets.
In part 2, the examiner gives a cue card to the candidate to speak on that topic. The candidate is given 1 minute to prepare on the topic. The candidate is expected to speak on the topic for two minutes.
The part 3 is called discussion. In this part, the examiner asks some follow-up questions on the cue card. The questions in this part are rather abstract than personal. This part lasts for about 4-5 minutes. The whole speaking test is completed between 12 and 15 minutes.
