It had been almost 8 years since I participated in an English Speaking Contest, standing on a grand stage in front of a hundred-strong audience, delivering one of the best speeches I've ever given with the support of my friends. That was an unforgettable moment in my life, the most magnificent experience, bar none, of my high school journey.
I had never imagined that one day I would be on stage talking about the thing I treasured most in my life—my family and friends—or that I would be qualified enough to represent the entire school in such a competition. If it hadn't been for my English teacher's constant encouragement, I wouldn't have participated in the contest in the first place. Students were free to choose their topics and were required to present them in front of a panel of judges and an audience. It sounded intimidating for many reasons, but I managed to overcome my anxiety and learned to believe in myself. The preparation for the big day was tough for everyone, both emotionally and physically. We practiced nonstop for 4 hours every single day. I focused on perfecting my pronunciation and acquiring an American accent, while my friends sang their hearts out to Miley Cyrus's song "True Friend" since we wanted to elevate our performance with some musical elements.
Our hard work paid off as we brought home the Champion Cup as well as the Best Performance Award. It brought tears to my eyes as I realized that at that moment, winning didn't matter as much as the fact that we had already won by pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones and persevering until the end. That was our true victory. Even now, the lesson I learned 8 years ago holds its value and serves as a reminder of those wonderful old days.
